Okon said they were committed to the development and delivery of affordable homes through the creation and sustenance of value added services to the satisfaction of their stakeholders. The managing director commended the permanent secretary on the innovation, maintaining that it was a fundamental way of moving organizations forward, adding that it takes a pragmatic and an astute leader to carry out the tour and appealed that the visit be carried out regularly. The bank's boss stated that the bank was established in 1990 and was the only surviving state-owned mortgage bank at the moment. He stated that it has four other branches at Eket, Oron, Abak and Ikot Ekpene, a new branch at Abak Road and cash centre at the Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Mkpat Enin, with 124 staff. Akwa hinted that though owned by the state government, their operation were not fully controlled by the government but by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). He maintained that they were into on-line banking at the head office and its various branches, adding that they have strong support from the government and ministries being the only state-owned financial institution. The managing director stated that their management staff were sent outside the country for training while the branch managers are sent to the Business School in Lagos regularly, adding that a cordial relationship exists between the managements and staff. He maintained that their corporate responsibilities include training of industrial attachees, sponsorship of scrabble competition and purchase of billboards and street guide. Akwa listed the bank's challenges to include inadequate capital base, lack of financing by the government, recapitalization by CBN to mortgage banks and low patronage from some ministries. Others are lack of long-term funding to embark on mega estates and other projects, poor staff remuneration, single ownership structure, poor technological skills on the part of staff and lack of mortgage assets in prime cities in the country. The permanent secretary, Mrs Mary Ewa, stated that the visit was to assess, monitor and evaluate the institution's productivity, service delivery, challenges and the way forward, thereafter present their report to the appropriate authorities for attention. Ewa stated that the bureau was also interested in productivity and public service matters aside labour issues, maintaining that since the government invests a lot of money on these organizations, it was expected that their productivity equates the investment. The permanent secretary commended the bank's management on its new look and the siting of four other branches at Eket, Abak, Oron and Ikot Ekpene, adding that with a young, pragmatic and active management team, they would achieve the best in all of their endeavours. She maintained that with the conducive working environment for management and staff, high level of productivity would be guaranteed, assuring them of a positive response from the government. Welcoming the permanent secretary and her team were the bank's secretary and legal adviser, Obong Nya Nya; deputy managing director, Mr Godwin Ekpo; Mr Sam Udombang, finance and accounts; Mr Brian Okon, engineering, Mr Godwin Udoh, internal audit and Mr Udosen, operations manager. | |

Akpabio's Education Programme A Model For All Govts – Soyinka
| The Akwa Ibom governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, has received commendations from Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, for his efforts in human capacity development in his state. Soyinka, who was the chairman of a discussion session at the second day of the South South Economic Summit in Asaba, Delta State, specifically mentioned Akpabio's target of training Akwa Ibom youths in specialized field of aviation as well as his free education to all youths in the state, maintaining that education models must be developed by governments at all levels. Akpabio at the summit had earlier told participants of his administration's investments in free and compulsory education for all Nigerians residing in Akwa Ibom from primary to senior secondary schools level, with an attendant revamping of education infrastructure in the state. Akpabio maintained that this gesture was to build the capacity of the youths to meet the manpower challenges of not only the emerging industrial economy of the state, but the highly competitive labour market in Nigeria. He said his educational scheme was devoid of any hidden charges as his government pays subventions to school heads in the state and has made a law, the child rights law, that among other things prohibits children of school age from being detained at home during school hours. Aside from this, Akpabio said he has sponsored several youths abroad on specialised training in aviation in view of the huge investments his government has made in the aviation industry. Akpabio, making comments as chairman of a session on security and national development on Day Two of the summit, advocated a review of the revenue sharing formula and unbundling of the responsibilities of the federal government to enable states and local governments have more funds to handle critical areas of development. | |

Akwa Ibom is a state in Nigeria named after the Qua Iboe river. It is located in the coastal South-Southern part of the country, lying between latitudes 4°321 and 5°331 North, and longitudes 7°251 and 8°251 East. The State is bordered on the east by Cross River State, on the west by Rivers State and Abia State, and on the South by the Atlantic Ocean and the southern-most tip of Cross River State.
Akwa Ibom is one of Nigeria’s 36 states with a population of over 5 million people and more than 10 million people in diaspora. It was created in 1987 from the former Cross River State and is currently the highest oil and gas producing state in the country. The state’s capital is Uyo with over 500,000 inhabitants . Akwa Ibom has an airport (Akwa Ibom International Airport) and two major sea ports on the Atlantic Ocean with a proposed construction of a world class seaport Ibaka Seaport at Oron. Along with English, the main spoken languages are Ibibio, Annang, Eket, and Oron languages.
Demography
The people are predominantly of the Christian faith. The main ethnic groups of the state are:
The Ibibio, Annang, who speak a dialect of the Ibibio Language, and Oron are the largest ethnic groups. The Oro [Oron] is an ethnic group similar to the Efik, which is predominant in neighbouring Cross River State, and found in five of the state's Local Government Areas. Located at the Atlantic Ocean contiguous to Oron are a group of Ibibio of Eket origins. The Igbo language is also spoken in Akwa Ibom in the northern and western land borders.
The Ibibio language belongs to the Benue-Congo language family, which forms part of the Niger-Congo group of languages.
Despite the homogeneity, no central government existed among the people of what is now Akwa Ibom State prior to the British invasion in 1904. Instead, the Annang, Oron, Efik, and Ibibio were all autonomous groups.
Although several Scottish missionaries arrived in Calabar in 1848, the British did not firmly establish control until 1904. In that year, the Enyong Division was created encompassing the area of the current state of Akwa Ibom, with the headquarters at Ikot Ekpene, an Annang city emerged described by the noted Africanist Kaanan Nair, as the cultural and political capital of Annang and Ibibio. The creation of Enyong Division, for the first time allowed the numerous ethnic groups to come together. This further provided a venue for the creation of the Ibibio Welfare Union, later renamed Ibibio State Union. The social organization was first organized as a local development and improvement forum for educated persons and groups who were shut out from the colonial administration in 1929. Nonetheless, some historians have wrongly pointed to the union to buttress their argument about the homogeneity of groups in the area.[citation needed]
When Akwa Ibom state was created in 1987, Uyo was chosen as the state capital to spread development to all regions of the state.
